Maria Hinojosa, author and senior correspondent who focuses on Hispanic issues around the globe for National Public Radio’s “Latino USA” program, will share insights into her varied career Thursday, November 12, as Rio Grande College Distinguished Lecturer.
Hinojosa takes to the podium for the free talk at 7 pm at the Eagle Pass International Center for Trade.
In Mexico, where Maria Hinojosa was born, being a traditional woman was defined by one thing: becoming a traditional mother. But there has never been anything traditional about this award-winning radio and television journalist.
As senior correspondent for the PBS newsmagazine, “Now,” Hinojosa brings strength to reporting, often illuminating the stories of unsung heroes. She is also host of a new PBS series, “One-on-One,” where she probes the minds of some of America’s foremost Latino leaders.
Before joining “NOW,” Hinojosa covered urban affairs for CNN and was a New York-based correspondent for National Public Radio.
She is the author of an acclaimed memoir, Raising Raul: Adventures Raising Myself and My Son,” which chronicles her personal experiences as a Mexican-American career woman, wife and mother living in New York. She also authored Crews: Gang Members Talk with Maria Hinojosa, a book based on her award-winning NPR report.
A recipient of numerous awards and honors, she has been named one of the “25 Most influential working mothers in America,” by Working Mother magazine, and three times over the past decade, Hispanic Business magazine named her “One of the 100 most influential Latinos in the United States. ”
