Department of Education

All deficiency plans are approved by the Chair of the Education Department. The primary function of Teacher Education within the philosophy of the University is to provide a teaching-learning environment wherein students acquire a liberal and professional education.

Realization of this function is sought by combining liberal arts courses, specialized studies, and professional education.  Students are provided opportunities to increase their knowledge, to gain insight into the growth of young children and adolescents, to develop competence in teaching, to formulate a sound philosophy of education, and to realize the need for continuous professional growth.

The programs of preparation for teaching achieve a proper balance which conforms to acceptable standards, yet allows flexibility for the individual needs of the students.

It is the responsibility of the student to request a degree plan, to follow it closely, and to complete all the requirements for the degree, as well as all requirements for teacher certification. All students who are to be admitted to the teacher education program must pass the mandated basic skills (THEA) test.

Students seeking certification must also pass the TExES exam in the teaching fields and in professional education.  Students seeking to take the TExES examination must meet and complete all departmental requirements including successful completion of the TExES preparation training and pre-test.
